The basics of rabies

If you or a loved one have been bitten by an animal in Illinois, one of your first concerns is likely whether or not you have been exposed to rabies. While the name of this disease is well-known, the symptoms are not always as clear. We at the Law Office of Kerley and Associates are here not only to represent your rights, but also to educate you on the signs and symptoms of rabies so that you can be prepared if you are bitten by an animal.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the acute symptoms of rabies generally last for two to 10 days. You may experience flu-like symptoms, such as headache, fever, discomfort or general weakness. The disease begins to affect the brain and confusion, anxiety and agitation ensue, followed by hallucinations, insomnia, delirium and other abnormal behaviors.

One thing you may not realize is that, once the signs of the disease appear, survival is nearly nonexistent. Fewer than ten documented cases of survival have been recorded in patients who exhibited the symptoms of rabies, despite obtaining medical help.

If you do suspect you were bitten by a rabid animal, a doctor can administer injections of the rabies vaccine and human immune globulin to help your body fight the disease. Washing the wound thoroughly with hot water and soap immediately after the bite is one of the best ways of preventing infection. Even after washing, you should always seek immediate medical attention. For more information on animal bites, please visit our web page.
