Tips for making the most of vacations after divorce

Many things change when you go through a divorce. Most people focus on things like how they will have to adjust their finances to live on one income or what changes their children will have to deal with. One thing that you may not consider is how vacations with the children will change.

After you go through a divorce, vacation planning may become more difficult. You’ll have to start the process off by looking at the parenting plan so you know what’s allowed and what’s expected. Learning these points before you start planning can help you avoid wasting time and money.

Parenting plans may restrict certain vacation options

Some plans have geographical restrictions that limit where a parent can take the children without the permission of the other parent or the court. If there is any limit present, getting the permission prior to planning may help. This is especially important if you plan on travelling internationally because of the requirements to obtain a passport for your children.

Some may have restrictions on when the children can travel. This might be based on the parenting time schedule. However, some parenting plans allow vacation plans to trump standard schedules. The trade-off is that you’d have to relinquish some of your parenting time to make up for the time you’ll have the children.

You’ll also have to consider other factors, such as notification or communication requirements. Understanding everything you’re responsible for and making sure you comply can prevent issues in the future. Because these matters can be complex, it’s often best to work with someone who can help you determine what you should do.
